Routine maintenance of milling machines is crucial for ensuring their performance, extending their service life, and maintaining machining accuracy. Here are some routine maintenance methods:

 

Exterior Cleaning
After each workday, the milling machine should be cleaned first. Use a clean cloth to wipe the worktable, guideways, column, and other parts of the milling machine to remove residual chips and coolant from the machining process. If chips accumulate over time, they may enter the moving parts of the machine, leading to accelerated wear. For hard-to-reach corners and crevices, use a brush to clean them, ensuring the machine's appearance is clean.

 

Guideway Maintenance
The guideways are a critical component of the milling machine, and their precision directly affects machining accuracy. Regularly (weekly recommended) apply lubricant to the guideway surface to reduce friction and wear. Before applying lubricant, clean the guideway surface thoroughly to prevent impurities from mixing into the lubricant. Use a dedicated guideway lubricant, which has excellent lubrication and anti-wear properties.

 

Lubrication System Inspection
Milling machines have multiple lubrication points, including guide rails, lead screws, gears, and other components. Regularly check the oil level in the lubrication system to ensure it is within the normal range. Low oil levels can lead to insufficient lubrication and damage to components. Also, check the oil pump for proper operation and for leaks in the oil lines. A comprehensive lubrication system inspection is generally recommended monthly.

 

Electrical System Maintenance
Regularly clean the dust inside the electrical control cabinet. Excessive dust accumulation can cause poor heat dissipation of electrical components and even short circuits. Use a small vacuum cleaner or a hairdryer (cool setting) for cleaning. Additionally, check the secure connections of electrical wires and ensure buttons and switches are functioning correctly.

 

Precision Inspection and Adjustment
Periodically check the precision of the milling machine (e.g., quarterly), including the flatness of the worktable and the straightness of the guide rails. If a decrease in precision is found, it can be restored by adjusting wedges, compensation mechanisms, etc. Furthermore, check the tool installation precision to ensure correct tool installation and minimize machining errors.
